Staying at the Empire Hotel. Masterton, are Mrs and Miss Guthrie, of Hastings.

Guests at the Midland Hotel. Masterton, include Messrs R. Shanahan, H. Strangemuir, B. P. Lemprere,.- L. Whittaker and J.' Ronald, all of Wellington. Major E. J. J. Welch, V.D., at one time attached to the Hawke’s Bay Regiment at Masterton as major and quartermaster, has been posted to the retired list.

Messrs Henry Smith, Waikaka Valley, and E. K. Sim, Pukemaori, have been elected as Southland members of the electoral committee of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board.

Among guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, are:—Mr and Mrs Simpson, Mrs Codd (Napier), Messrs S. R. Faulknor (Napier), E. G. Scrimshaw (Hamilton), G. Riesperer, B. A. Moriarty (Feilding), L. Harris, W. Mclnley, E. Baird and B. Lee (Martinborough). Mr Malcolm Fraser, who has been honorary secretary of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society since its inception, relinquished the position at the annual meeting of the society. He was thanked on behalf of delegates by the chairman, Mr J. M. A. Hott, and appreciation of his services was recorded. Mr W. J. Boden, senior inspector of the Wanganui Education Board, died yesterday, after a brief illness, says a Press Association message. He was transferred to the Wanganui district two and a half years ago. His teaching service was spent in the Auckland district.

The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital on Saturday of Mrs H. H. Lappien, of Longbush. The late Mrs Lappien, who was 33 years of age, had only been married about twelve months. She was a daughter of Mrs H. Hind, of Hinemoa. The funeral took place at Pahiatua this afternoon.

After a short illness Mr Daniell Buckley, of Watt Street. Wadestown, died last week. He came to New Zealand with his parents, Mi- and Mrs Andrew Buckley. The family settled in Canterbury, but for fifty years Mr Daniel Buckley lived in Wellington. Mr Buckley was well known in the hotel trade, with which he was connected. He retired from active business about 12 years ago. There was a large and representative attendance of mourners at the funeral in Masterton on Saturday afternoon of the late Mr William Brown. A service was held at St. Matthew's Church by the Rev. E J.. Rich, who also officiated at the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. Messrs C. Murphy, T. Carver, A. Vowles, L. King, B. Hawkins and S. Smith acted as pallbearers. The death has occurred, a London cablegram reports, of Canon William Emery Barnes, Hulsean Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University from 1901 to 1934. Canon Barnes, who was aged 80, held the positions of Warden of the Central Society of Sacred Study for the diocese of Canterbury, Canon Theologian of Leicester, and Emeritus Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge, at the time of his death. He had been a Lecturer in Hebrew and was the author of many religious publications.

The Prime Minister, Mr Savage, continues to make rapid progress toward recovery following his recent serious abdominal operation. During the past week he has been permitted an increasing number of visitors, who have included the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, several members of Cabinet, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Hamilton, and Mr Forbes, the former Prime Minister. Mr Savage, who expects to remain in hospital for another week or so, will complete his convalescence at his home in Northland.
