REGENT THEATRE

“STOLEN LIFE.” The success of “Stolen Life,” the great Elizabeth Bergner film, which will be shown at the Regent Theatre tonight, which was first shown in England early in January, has surprised even the most 1 optimistic. Although it started its run early in the New Year, at the end of April, it was still taking big money at the Carlton Theatre in the fourth month of its London run. Considerably more than 100,000 people had seen it and the stream of eager theatregoers was still filing in an undiminished volume past the Carlton box-office Many famous people have seen "Stolen Life” during its run. Their Majesties the King and Queen had a special performance at Sandringham and recently the Duke and Duchess of York visited the Carlton to see the film. Although almost impossible to imagine it happening in real life, the story of “Stolen Life” is acted with such skill that it carries conviction. This is largely due to the genius of Elisabeth Bergner who, with Michael Redgrave, stars in the film. Redgrave has the part of a mountaineer, a leader of overseas expeditions. He meets a girl who fascinates him. but he already has a wife. His wife, however, dies in an accident, but it is not the girl who takes the first wife’s place, but her twin sister. This twin sister is much more versed in the aft of making love and capturing a man than her counterpart, and when she finds herself in a position to steal the life of her-sister she does not hesitate to do so. The supporting programme contains several items of interest, including gazettes. A musical item of outstanding merit is a “Tannhauser” selection played by the Philharmonic Orchestra, reinforced by male voices.
