DEATH DUTIES
VIEWS OF DUNEDIN MEMBER.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, This Day. “I am sorry that death duties are not higher,” said Dr. D. G. McMillan (Government, Wunedin West) in commending the Budget provision for an increase in death duties when speaking in the debate on the Financial Statement in the House of Representatives yesterday. “I believe in work,” Dr. McMillan said. “I don’t mind a man gathering things together if he has earned them, but there is no justification for a person to be left large numbers of possessions. People should be rewarded according to the service they render, and I think death duties on estates of more than .£lO,OOO should be increased by about 60 per cent.” Dr. McMillan said he hoped that the people who rendered real service would receive higher incomes in future, and that the incomes of those who rendered no service or harmful service would be reduced. For instance, he would rather see a highly skilled engineer getting £lO,OOO a year than see a man get £lO,OOO a year for brewing beer.
