SNOW IN OTAGO
GOODS TRAIN CAUGHT IN DRIFT.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN. August 14
Any danger of another snowstorm of the magnitude of that of last month disappeared today, when bright sunshine quickly melted the light carpet which covered the city on Sunday night, but a particularly heavy fall in Central Otago caused serious dislocation of traffic on the line between Dunedin and Cromwell. A goods train was completely snowed in near Hyde, and, when an endeavour was made to free it from large drifts, the engine and van were derailed, preventing the running of two Central Otago trains. GALE IN TARANAKI. TELEPHONE & POWER LINES DAMAGED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, August 14. Telephone and power lines were damaged in many parts of Taranaki by a high wind that at one stage this morning reached a velocity of 63 miles an hour. Telephone communication with North Egmont Hostel was cut off all the morning, but other damage was of a minor nature and the services wore restored.
