FATAL INJURIES
WOMAN KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR. ACCIDENT AT DEVONPORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 13. Knocked down by a motor-car in Devonport on Saturday night, an elderly woman received concussm i and head injuries and died in a private hospital this morning. The victim was Mrs Maria Sandford, aged 62, of Devonport. The accident occurred almost outside the public library. The drivers of the car was Trevor Mathers, of Grafton Road. FIVE INJURED. COLLISION DURING CYCLE RACE. AUCKLAND. August 13. A collision involving a motor-cyclist and a group of four racing cyclists competing in the North Shore Amateur Cycling Club's 52-mile road race, occurred just south of Orewa Bridge on Saturday afternoon. The five riders concerned were injured and two were brought to Auckland in an ambulance while the others came by car. Three of the racing cyclists were admitted to Auckland Hospital. The victims were: —
Andrew Elia, aged 23, Birkenhead; head and facial injuries; condition serious at first, but improved. Frank Fredrea, aged 19. Point Chevalier; fractured thumb; condition not serious. Cyril Douglas Lapwood, aged 22, Onehunga; shock and scalp abrasions; condition not serious. Charles Henry Picknell, aged 19, Onehunga; body bruises. ’Harry Rogers, motor-cyclist, Eden Terrace; fractured finger. The last two were not admitted to hospital. CAR STRIKES POLE. YOUNG WOMAN INJURED. AUCKLAND. August 13. When the motor-ear in which she was a passenger collided with a telegraph post in Otahuhu. Miss Lorraine Rosalind Vitali, aged 21. dressmaker, of Otahuhu. received concussion. Her condition on admission to hospital was considered to be serious. MOTOR-CYCLIST BREAKS LEG. HASTINGS. August 13 While passing through Longlands Dip shortly after G p.m. yesterday, on his way from Hastings to Pakipaki, a motor-cyclist, Mr Peter Waikai, Pakipaki, was dazzled b.y the lights of an approaching car and swerved so suddenly that he and his pillion rider wore tipped off. Mr Waikai’s leg was fractured, but the pillion rider, Mr Pukiti Wharomatua. was uninjured.
