MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL.

RECREATION GROUND PROPOSAL..

The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday, Councillor E. W. Cheetham (chairman) presiding, there being also present Councillors A. Forsberg, D. Bennett, C. Welch and A. Gray. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor R. Judd.

I The finance statement showed a debit balance of £645 and accounts amounting to £777 2s were passed. The clerk. Mr A. W. S Rollings, reported that approximately half the rates levied had been received in time for discounts to be allowed thereon. The State Forest Service notified allocation of £3 Its 5d in respect of fifths for the quarter to June 30 and it was proposed to apply this amount towards maintenance of general county roads as hitherto. Mr A. G. Thorby wrote that one road leading to his property required attention and the clerk was directed to reply that owing to the recent inclement weather this work could not be carried out as the Council had hoped and that it would be done as soon as possible. Mr I. W. Cameron wrote regarding the condition of the bridge adjacent to his property and the clerk was directed to reply giving-him some particulars of the circumstances connected with this bridge and stating that the Council felt .bound to adhere to the legal opinion taken some time ago for the guidance of the Council in connection with this matter.

A proposal to acquire some land for the purposes of establishing recreation grounds in Mauriceville was considered and the chairman was requested to obtain further particulars as to what land might be available and the course to pursue for further consideration at the next meeting of the Council.. The chairman reported that application had been made for the consideration of the Main Highways Board in regard to increased maintenance subsidy being granted in respect of the increased cost of running county lorries. owing to the recent increased tax on benzine.

The overseer reported satisfactory progress of all work and prospective work was considered and arranged for.
