LONDON SAVED
IN MOCK AIR WAR KEEN ATTACKERS BEATEN BY ALERT DEFENCE. BLOCKOUT HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 11.40 a.m.) RUGBY. August 11. The chief events of last night’s air war wore two heavy offensives by Eastland bombers —one over the Midlands and another in two places over the London area and south-east England. The defenders, after observing the invaders shortly before midnight, were assisted to some extent by low clouds and patches of fog which forced the attackers to hug the coast north of the Thames Estuary and hampered them in the south. The offensive, however, was very determined. Navigators reported the success of the blackout in London, which looked like very small and scattered villages. An Air Ministry communique praises the attackers for the skill shown in manoeuvres, but says the keenness of the defenders, aided by the blackout and the efficiency of the Observer Corps, saved London from destruction.
