Scenes of terror were witnessed in five towns in central Bulgaria, when 800 square miles were shaken by a severe earthquake. Walls cracked, chimneys toppled down, and inhabitants rushed into the streets panicstricken. The towns affected included Plovdid, the second largest in Bulgaria. No details of casualties are available.
