MASTERTON COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL
DAMAGE TO PLANTATIONS BY STOCK.
PROPOSED EXHIBITION OF PICTURES.
I The monthly meeting of the Master- ; ton County Council was held yesterI day. Those present were the chairman ' (Mr R. E. Gordon Lee) and Councillors W. I. Armstrong. G. Moore. H. H. Mawley. J. W. Colquhoun. P. R. Welch and J. Donald. The District Engineer, Public Works Department wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council's application to legalise a section of the No 64 Masterton Castlepoint main highway in the vicinity of the Taueru Deviation, and intimating that in addition to the information contained on P.W. form 178. it would be necessary to forward tracings in duplicate and area schedule of the length of road concerned and proposed to be legalised. This was necessary as the transaction had to be registered by the District Land Registrar of the Lands Department. As there was already an approved survey of the length of road concerned it. would only be necessary for the council to have certified tracings compiled of this already approved plan. The information was submitted tc i the consulting engineers so that they might carry out the requests as out lined. , The Commissioner of Transport advised that as a result of the operation of the Rental Vehicle Regulations 1939 it was now incumbent upon all licensees under these regulations to make sure that driver's licenses produced bj any per desirous of hiring a motor vehicle belonging to that person and had not been borrowed for the occasion. The Rental Vehicles Regulations also insisted on the hirer's signature being verified by that shown on his driver’s license. Attention had recently been drawn to a number of cases where driver’s licenses have been produced and which did not bear the licensee’s signature, and having regard to the fact that personal application for a renewal of a license was compulsory, unless under exceptional circumstances, it was considered that the present difficulties could be overcome b> all local authorities insisting on the driver’s license being signed in the presence of the issuing clerk, and asking for the council’s co-operation in this direction. The letter was received and its contents noted. Advice was received from the secretary of the National Art Gallery ol New Zealand that the committee of
management of the National Art Gallery had under consideration a scheme for art education work outside the boundaries of Wellington itself and giving particulars of the proposal that it had in mind for an exhibition o< pictures or reproductions which will be held in different towns for a brie! period and which will be in charge oi a competent person who will be able to conduct visitors around the exhibition and give talks on the pictures. These exhibitions should be of interest and value to children and the committee of management of the National Art Gallery was particularly anxious tc secure the co-operation of schools. The committee desired to know whether the council would welcome an exhibition of pictures in Masterton and if so, what facilities or assistance would be available; if favourable the council might nominate some membei of the council so arrangements could be made. It was suggested that the Masterton Borough and Masterton County could be served best by holding the proposed exhibition at Masterton.
Councillor Armstrong strongly supported the proposal and suggested tha a committee be formed to co-operatc with the Masterton Borough Council in an endeavour to hold an exhibition. “I have seen these pictures and can assure Councillors that they arc well worth seeing,” he added. The following committee was appointed to co-operate with the borough council in the matter: Councillors Welch, Gordon Lee and Mawley. The secretary of the Masterton Goll Club made formal application for the right to draw water from/the Opaki water race, and pointed out that his committee had approved of a scheme having as its object the watering ol the greens on the Clubls course provided that suitable arrangements, could be made with the council foi the appropriate supply of water. Il the council would appoint a sub-com-mitteb to meet a committee from thi Club he was certain that a free discussion of the whole project would make the position perfectly clear. A committee comprising the County Clerk, Councillors Colquhoun and Welch was set up to meet the club. The secretary of the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club wrote thanking th< council, on behalf of the committee, foi the financial support given to the clul: for the current financial year. It was stated that all of the boroughs and counties in the No. 10 Heavy Traffic District have agreed to a continuation of the present agreement in respect of the allocation of heavy traffic fees lor a further period of 2 years As considerable damage has been caused, at the Homewood Road plantation by wandering stock, it was decided that in future all stock found wandering in the plantation would be impounded. |
"There are several short and narrow fillings at the 11 miles peg on the Mas-terton-Weber main highway and as the mechanical digger is in the district the overseer has suggested having the work done." said Councillor Mawley. "The cost would be about £75." It was decided to carry out the work suggested. The Clerk- was instructed to corns mencc the working of the crusher at the Opaki depot. COUNTY WORK. ENGINEER’S REPORT.
