COURSING

MEETING ON SATURDAY

WELLINGTON COMPETITORS WIN BOTH EVENTS.

HARES IN EXCELLENT FETTLE

On Saturday afternoon before a good attendance of spectators the Cooper Challenge Cup and Maiden Stake were competed for at the Wairarapa Coursing Club’s meeting at the Akura Plumpton. The weather conditions were not the best, a cold southerly wind making the afternoon rather trying, although quite suitable for coursing. Some very fine performances were witnessed during the day, especially the two final courses when Mr La Roche's Desert Storm won the Cup, and Mr Ratcliffe's Gay Master the Maiden, both dogs showing exceptional speed throughout their courses. The hares ran splendidly in every course and were in better form than at any of the previous meetings of the season.

As Mr La Roche and Mr Ratcliffe both came from Wellington, it was quite a field day for that centre, and their successes proved a popular win for these enthusiastic sportsmen.

At the conclusion of the sport, the trophies were presented by the president, Mr J. Bradbury, to the winning owners. Mr Bradbury announced that as the hares were running so strongly the club would hold another meeting on Saturday next, when a 16-Dog Maiden Stake and Waterloo Cup Trials for dogs nominated for the New Zealand Classic to be run at Hastings, will be seen in action, in a final preparation 1 for the big event of the year in the coursing world.
