TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Grand National Fields Reviewed MAJORITY LOOKS LIKE ANNEXING WINTER CUP SLAYER GAINING FAVOUR IN STEEPLECHASE (BY “CARBINE.”) Tomorrow one of the .biggest, important, and most popular race meetings in New Zealand will open at Riccarton, when the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National fixture will commence. The meeting is extended over three days and jumping events are in the majority. The win-and-place method of betting will be in operation. The chief event on the attractive programme is the Grand National Steeplechase, which, as in past years, has been a topic of interest since the jumping season began. Interest in this race will be centred round the brilliant Padishah, who is a firm favourite, and Survoy, winner of the Great Northern and Wellington steeples. Slayer has gained rapid favour also.

Trial Hurdles in which nine first class jumpers have been engaged. Peter Beckford must be given every chance as he is in fine form at present. Then comes Dividend with 10.11 up. Dividend is another who must be seriously considered and this horse should not be far away at the finish. McHeath will also receive plenty of support and should be with the leaders for most of the journey. Araboa will probably find support in some quarters and is not to be overlooked. Chat, Last Link and Jewish Lad will all be on hand to make matters interesting. However, those finding most favour may include Peter Beckford Dividend Chat

Gay Chou, the Masterton-trained horse has been given the honour of top weight in the Paparua Handicap. Gay Chou is a brilliant runner and is at present in splendid form. This horse is expected to run a good race and should be well up at the post: Counterblast has done nothing of late and does not impress greatly, although she is capable of winning in this company. Mittie at 9.0 looks a good bet and will probably be well supported. Ned Cuttie must not be lost sight of and his win in the Winter Oats at Wellington last month will help him to gain support. Konneta, Tooley Street, Lady Leigh and Land Raid all have the best of credentials and their chances must be seriously considered. Straightdell and Might will also be in the hunt. The brilliant Skyrena has been doing great work of late and although not very successful in recent starts is likely to command support in this event. Those finding support may include Mittie Gay Chou Skyrena 12.52— JUMPERS’ FLAT RACE. One mile and a half.

The brilliant King Rey should give an excellent account of himself. The Sandwich Man has been doing good track work at Riccarton and will be liked by many. Charade must be given a great show ip this race, and her three wins in a row will find her support. Mount Vai is also a form horse whose chances of success cannot be overlooked. Jewelled Girdle is expected to gain a place in many quarters while

Silk Sox, Pink Robe and Ellanui will be on hand at the finish. In an open event those commanding most favour may include < King Rey Charade Jewelled Girdle or Ellanui 1.37—

The Cashmere Plate will probably provide the surprise of the day as the form of most of the runners is unknown. Alcatraz, Chit Chat and Little Robin can all claim support. Kaiwaka scored in the Glenmore Maiden Race at Rangitikei last month and should be liked by many. Royal Show must command every respect, and Lord Midas is not to be forgotten. Indian Sun’is a horse who might upset calculations. In an interesting race the leaders as they cross the line may include

Kaiwaka Royal Show Indian Sun

2.22— NEW ZEALAND GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE. Three miles and a half.

Erination must be seriously considered and should not be far away when the final numbers go up. Padishah still remains favourite and it appears as if he will have to fall over to lose. Survoy will, of course, be with the leaders in the run home, while Silver Sight is a horse likely to make matters difficult for the leaders. A horse who is rapidly gaining favour is Slayer and his workouts have been very encouraging. Cottingham and Gold Wren are not to be forgotten as both are capable of beating the entire field. However, the distance looks too much for Gold Wren, jyianawatu and Tom Cat will be on hand to make the race interesting, but the public may go for Padishah Survoy Slayer

Only seven runners are scheduled to face the starter in the Enfield Steeplechase. El Caballo is expected to be on hand for most of the way. Hanover looks a good bet as this horse is in good form and jumps nicely. Pandine appears a bit slow but at the same time, is not to be entirely put aside. Glenvane must be considered, so must Culverden. Uncle Jim fell at Christchurch last week but will be on hand. Those in favour on the day may include Hanover Glenvane El Caballo

Catalogue, who is credited with 10.3 in the Winter Cup. will be certain to find favour with a large section of the public. The brilliant Taranaki horse Majority, will carry only one pound less than the top weight and is expected to run well. Dungarvan. Alma and Haughty Winner are all capable of winning this race. Nightcalm, with only 9.4 up. looks a good punt. The Masterton-trained Lady Montana is expected to give a good account of herself and in view of recent performances will probably be well backed. Trench Fight has boon working well and Dictate is a good one. Fleet Street has not won in the last two starts but the chances of this horse are not to bo discarded. Of the others Ruling Spi looks the better and the end will probably find this horse well up. Public opinion may favour Majority Nitjhtcalm Ruling Spi

Lockit 8 0] The Avonhead Handicap, the last race of the day, has attracted a first class field. Raana, who is a form horse, is likely to be well to the fore for most of the seven furlongs. The Wrecker will probably be well backed and should give his supporters a good run. Dancing Flame. Ohmaha, Waka. Le Toquet and Flame Queen are all of the best and should not be far away at the right end. Brilliant Boa is a runner likely to upset the best of fields and must be considered. Lady Tinkle at 8.4 must be a candidate and money will probably be forthcoming for her. Phenomenal is a phenomenal horse and will be well liked with only 9.0 up. Capricious might be worthy of notice and Hunting Chorus is not to be passed over. Public support may come for

Lady Tinkle Phenomenal The Wrecker
