EKETAHUNA

COUNTY COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) | The chairman (Mr J. B. Carruthers) i presided at the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council. A letter was received from the Eketahuna Borough Council asking for a donation to the Reading Room and that last year's contribution of £6 be raised to £lO. Councillor R. Kebbell said he had a complaint to make in regard to the reading room, that there was no fire in the room. He considered it an airless, evil-smelling place. The service the county people got from it under these conditions was not worth the grant of £6. The room should be heated. It was decided that the Borough Council's attention be called to the matter of airing and heating the Reading Room. It was also decided to make a grant of £6. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote agreeing to the Council taking metal from Blewitt’s pit. With regard to their request that control be vested in the council, this matter must be held over as Mr Blewitt had a lease. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking for an amount of £4O this being a royalty on 1.600 yards of metal from the Blue Pit al 6d a yard. Councillor Carruthers moved that the Clerk write to the Masterton Borough Council emphasising that the access road and bridges were of definite benefit to them and also to the present tenant. The motion was carried. The Public Works Department has now taken over the pit and the council can get metal required. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Patching work and maintenance grading were carried out on the Eketahuna end. An Eye to Business,

It is often said that the early bird catches the worm, but if rumour is correct it was a couple of very late bird: who on Tuesday night caught thi equivalent of many worms. A certair business man. who, in the course of hi: business, uses a groat deal of petrol was listening in to the budget broadcast. Hearing the proposal to increase the petrol tax he listened no longer. Within a few minutes, he had two lorries on the road to Wellington and next morning was able to boast of a considerable load of petrol purchased before the rise. There's something to be said for broadcasting. Early Lambs. Spring is here. At least, a few lambs are appearing in the paddocks and or the farm of one super-optimist is : flock of shorn sheep.
