INFANT DROWNED
MURDER CHARGE AGAINST MOTHER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. August 6. The discovery of the dead body of a six-months-old infant in the bathroom of an apartment above a shop in Upper Symonds Street, near Newton Road, was made early on Saturday afternoon. Death was apparently due to drowning, and, after inquiry by detectives, a young married woman, mother of the child, was arrested on a charge of murder. On account of the mother's health, the grandmother of the child had recently arrived from Wellington to assist in the household. She returned from a walk shortly after noon on Saturday, and. entering the bathroom, found the unclothed body of the child in the bath, which contained several inches of water. The mother of the infant was also in the apartment, but the father was absent at the time. Attempts at resuscitation were begun by a neighbouring chemist. His efforts were continued by a doctor, but they proved unavailing. A post-morten examination of the infant was carried out. The arrested woman will appear in the Magistrates’ Court tomorrow. REMAND GRANTED. APPEARANCE OF ACCUSED IN COURT. AUCKLAND. This Day. Clare Norecn Hill, a married woman aged 24, was charged in the Police Court with the murder of her infant, Brian Holmes Hill. Detective-Sergeant Nalder asked for a remand to August 14. Mr Jacobsen, for the accused, said: “I don't suppose it is of any use to ask for bail." The Magistrate (Mr W. R. McKean): I "I think some other steps probably will ; be taken.” A remand was granted.
