WOMEN’S DIVISION
RANGITUMAU BRANCH. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A very enjoyable time was spent at the Country Women’s Clubroom yesterday, the occasion being the monthly meeting of the Rangitumau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs D. James presided over a good attendance of members and friends. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs McGovern in connection with the death of her brother-in-law. The delegates to the Dominion Conference submitted an interesting report. Mrs Alexander sang and Mrs Morton contributed pianoforte items. Mesdames Alexander and Morton acted as judges of the various competitions which resulted as follows: — One bloom, Mr§ Duckett 1, Miss Kemble 2; three blooms, Mrs Chorley 1, Miss I. Harvey 2; wholemeal date scones, Mrs Duckett 1, Miss J. McLachlan 2; cretonne article, Mrs Wrigley 1, Mrs Duckett 2. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Alexander and Mrs Morton and to the hostesses, Mrs D. James and Mrs Seward.
The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs L. R. Wilton and the competitions will be: A jar of marmalade and an article from felt hats (not more than three hats.) MEETING OF MASTERTON BRANCH. PAN-PACIFIC ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mrs Ken Groves presided over a good attendance. Mrs C. C. Jackson, in moving a resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr C. E. Daniell, spoke very feelingly of his passing. Mr Daniell had been very helpful and generous to the Division in its early stages, for which it was ever grateful. He was in truth one of nature’s gentlemen. Masterton had lost a good citizen and the Division a good friend. The secretary was instructed to convey the deep sympathy of the Division to Mrs Dillon, the Misses Kummer and Mr C. Weston in connection with their recent bereavements. With reference to the Pan-Pacific Association Conference, to be held at Wellington from January 11 to 26, 1940, Dean Bollert, International President of the P.P.W.A. has written the Prime Minister a letter of appreciation of the grant of £5OO made by the New Zealand Government towards conference expenses. She says, inter alia: —“The news of this contribution will be received with the greatest delight by all members of the Council of the Association, not only because it will greatly facilitate the preparations for the conference, but no less because it is an indication of the contribution which your Government expects this conference to make to the cause of international peace, in whose interests , it will assemble. It is our faith that ' this association has already brought many of the women, at least, of the Pacific area into closer understanding and friendship, and this approaching conference will be, in all likelihood, the most important that has so far
been convened.” Dean Bollert also stated that Masterton is the first town to invite overseas speakers to give addresses. The invitation comes from the United Church Guild. It was resolved that the Division support the Guild in entertaining the speakers who would be visiting Masterton. The meeting was advised that the Pioneer Book, recently published, was now for sale on application to Mesdames T. R. Barrer, C. C. Jackson or A. lorns. It was decided to hold a shop day on September 6 in the Occidental Mart, when members are respectfully requested to contribute freely either in cash or kind. During the meeting the president, on behalf of the Division, presented Mrs Alex Donald, who had recently relin-
quished her position as treasurer, with a posy and a fountain pen as a slight appreciation of Mrs Donald’s invaluable services to the Division over many years. Mrs Donald thanked the president and the members for their kindly thought and assured them that her association with them all would ever remain a very happy memory. She was accorded musical honours. Owing to the late hour the delegates’ report of the Dominion Conference held in Wellington recently was held over for a Tuturc meeting.
