MOBILE FORCE
PROPOSAL REJECTED IN AUSTRALIA UNIVERSAL TRAINING NOT FAVOURED. RELIANCE ON VOLUNTARY MILITIA. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. J 0.50 a.m.) CANBERRA. August 2. The Prime Minister. Mr R. G. Menzies. announced that the Government had decided to reject the proposal to establish a permanent mobile force in Australia. He added that the Government was not satisfied that there would be a proper proportion between the outlay involved (£1.875,000 in the first year) and the result. It is considered that the real problem is that cf effectively training and equipping ordinary citizens to defend Australia. Cabinet also decided against introduction of universal military training, and instead will take steps to intensify the training of the existing voluntary militia.
