BOWLING FOR WOMEN

POSSIBILITY IN MASTERTON. INCREASING CLUB MEMBERSHIP. The possibility of allowing women to join the Masterton Bowling Club is being discussed in some quarters. It is stated that the club needs at least a hundred members so as to give it greater financial strength in order to cope more favourably with the expenditure involved in maintaining two greens. If it is found impossible to reach a membership of a hundred men, it is urged that membership should be extended to women, as it is felt that there are many ladies in Masterton who would welcome the opportunity of playing bowls. In this connection, many of the principal South Island bowling chibs and one or two North Island clubs have lady members, who in the South Island have established their own centre for the running of tournaments. It is considered that convenient arrangements could be made so that playing hours observed by the ladies would not interfere with Saturday or evening play by the men. Women, for instance, might be allowed to play during the week, before 5 p.m., but not on Saturday. It is stated that there is a possibility of a meeting of Masterton Club members being called in the near future to discuss the matter.
