HALT CALLED
ATTEMPTS TO REFLOAT PORT BOWEN MORE FAVOURABLE WEATHER WANTED. ROUGH SEA YESTERDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, July 31. With the departure today of the tugs Terawhiti and Toia for Wellington and the tug Lyttelton II for Lyttelton, there will be no further attempts to move the stranded liner Port Bowen from the beach at Castlecliff' till the cargo has been removed, the ship lightened and mushroom anchors laid. All this will be done when the weather becomes favourable. In the meantime salvage gear is being brought to Wanganui for use on the Port Bowen and on the beach opposite where the liner is stranded. A large anchor was transferred from the Port Bowen to the shore today and taken by lorry to Castleclifl' wharf. Later it will be laid with the mushroom anchors on the seaward side of the stranded ship. Today a strong south-easterly wind sprang up, whipping up a rough sea off the entrance to the port in the afternoon. Tramway revenue has benefited by interest in the stranded Port Bowen, three times tne usual number of passengers being transported to and from Castleclifl' yesterday. The average amount collected on a winter Sunday is £lB, but yesterday £53 was collected, an increase of £35.
