Punishment for a Husband
A quaint incident aboard an immigrant ship on her way to New Zealand in 1840, as related by the ship's doctor, was mentioned by Professor J. Rutherford in a lecture in Auckland. Hearing a commotion forward, the doctor and others found a struggling and protesting man suspended in an open hatchway by a rope around his waist. The other end of the rope was held by a party of men. who explained that the victim had been found battering his wife, and they had decided to punish him. The officers ordered the man to be hauled up, and admonished the.others for taking the law into their own hands. Investigation showed that the wife had brought the trouble on herself by incessant nagging, and apparently nothing further was done about the matter.
Looking out of his window the other evening, a correspondent says he was amazed to see several urchins playing tag among his prize Alpine plants. Round the rugged rockery the ragged rascals ran.
A reminder is given that St. Matthew’s Girls’ Club will present their annual concert tomorrow evening (Tuesday), at 8 o’clock. The club has a splendid record of successful concerts and has attained a very high standard indeed this year. The club, under the direction of Mrs E. J. Rich, will present three bright comedies, together with other items. A really happy evening's entertainment is assured. Seats may be booked at Mr J. Ninnes’s shop.
