CARTERTON
THE DAIRY INDUSTRY CHEESp FACTORIES OPEN. NEXT MONTH. (“Times-Age” Special.) It is expected cheese factories in the district will commence operations for the current season about the middle of August, and preparations are being made for an early supply of milk. Many farmers have already cows in profit. Dairy farmers who have had their dairy herds in grazing quarters away from their farms report varying results in connection with the severe snowstorm this week. Some of the cows have come through the trying period well, while others have not been so successful. One farmer is reported to have lost five of his best milkers and others have had losses from one to three animals. Additions have been made to the Waihokeke Co-operative Cheese Factory. These include more space in the curing room and facilities for a further vat in the factory. The work is well forward and everything will be in readiness for the opening of the season which is not far distant. MINIATURE RIFLES INTER-ASSOCIATION MATCHES. Wairarapa will fire a match against the Bush District' Association on the Carterton range tonight. There will be twenty competitors aside. A post match between the Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa Associations has been arranged and will take place next week. The match will be 20aside. Metric targets will be used, 25 yards with two sighting shots. POULTRY ASSOCIATION MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Wairarapa Poultry, Cage Bird and Pigeon Association was held on Thursday evening, Mr Geo. Edge (president), presiding. There were also present Miss M. A. Taucher. Mrs C. Meyrick, Messrs J. M. Nicholls, J. Wilson, C. W. Gaze, F. Curry and the secretary, Mr O. Anderson. Accounts covering the whole show, amounting to £7O Is 2d, were passed for payment. Mr .1. M. Nicholls very kindly redonated his judging expenses of £1 to the funds of the society, and was accorded a vote of thanks. It was reported that the attendance at the show was quite up to the first exhibition and that the takings were considered highly satisfactory. It was resolved the secretary forward letters of appreciation to all who had worked in the interest of the show and who had thereby made it the success recorded. The credit balance over the show is £8 and considering the added expenses which have now become assets the result is very satisfactory. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE FATHERS’ NIGHT AT DALEFIELD. There was a very large attendance at the gathering held in the Dalefield Hall last evening when members of the Dalefield-Matarawa Women’s Institute entertained the fathers. Everything went oft with a swing and the gathering was among the best that has been held In the district and was enjoyed by all. The ladies are to be complimented upon the splendid programme that was arranged. Two delightful plays were given, “The Fortune Teller,” in which there were two characters. Mrs Ross Gallon and Mrs F. Groube. The other play was entitled “The Rest Cure,” those taking part being Mesdames G. Knowles, O. Brazendale, Hughes, R. Callister and Misses J. Nielsen and B. Knowles. Both plays were well received and applauded throughout. Several choruses given by members of the Institute were greatly appreciated and encored. After the concert part of the programme had been completed supper was. provided being presided over by members of the Institute. The floor was then cleared and dancing was indulged in until after midnight. The music was voluntarily supplied by a number of those present. “Fathers' Night" at Dalefield will be remembered as a happy event for some time to come. Personal. Mr Thos Harp, of the teaching staff of the Carterton District High School, is to relieve at the Marama School in the Bush district owing to a teacher being on sick leave.
