RUGBY FOOTBALL
WIN FOR WELLINGTON.
ASHBURTON OVERWHELMED,
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, This Day. For the first time in the history of Rugby, an Ashburton team tried conclusions with a Wellington representative fifteen at Athletic Park yesterday afternoon, and the result was an overwhelming victory, for Wellington by 47 points to 14.
The tourists were at a disadvantage in being without the services of their captain and hooker, E. McKenzie, who had a hand badly injured in Wanganui. His place as leader was ably taken by Behrns, the full-back of the side, who was responsible for 11 of the 14 points scored by the southern team, as ho kicked three penalty goals, and converted the only try (scored by Fergus) scored by the southerners.
The weather was fine, but bitterly cold, with a fresh southerly breeze blowing. Some 2000 spectators enjoyed the bright display given by Wellington, whose backs were too fast for the opposition, and scored almost at will. Sherratt scored four tries for Wellington, Wright (2), Thomas Tindill (2). Hegglun and Cooper also scored tries, seven of which Taylor converted. TEAMS FOR SATURDAY. Masterton thirds to play Featherston at Featherston:—Prout. Robinson, McHattie, Stevens (2>. Barber. Griffin. Morris, Wilton (2). Leigh. Blake. Harrison. McCracken, Tilyard. Harris. Peers, Dickason. McDonald. The bus will leave the Post Office at 1.15 p.rn. sharp.
