TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE

Manawatu Hunt Club Meeting Reviewed GLENVANE AND ROYAL TOAST SHOULD FIGHT OUT STEEPLECHASE CAN LADY MONTANA TURN TABLES ON TIDEWAITER IN OPEN EVENT? (BY -CARBINE.”) High quality runners will be seen in action at the Manawatu Hunt Club meeting at Palmerston North on Saturday. The majority of events have attracted big entries as well and a good day’s racing should result. Main interest will probably be centred round the Manawatu Hunt Cup steeplechase, in which Glenvane and Royal Toast, two recent impressive winners, are engaged. The other big event on the excellent programme will be the Open Handicap. Here again form horses will take part, with the Masterton-trained Lady Montana running against horses such as Hunting Mint and Tidewaiter. It will be interesting to see whether or not Tidewaiter will repeat the Wellington performance.

Ohanga has not been in action for some time and might be in need of a race or two before striking form. Kohika. who went to the barrier first favourite in the Otairi Ladies’ Bracelet at the Rangitikei meeting last week, will, carry the same weight. Kohika ran a good race at Marton but the weight proved too much. Umpire might be supported but does not impress very much. Gladium’s win at Marton will be certain to find support for that horse. Lacan, who filled third position in the same race, must be given every show as he had a bad run in the early portion of the race and could not make up the lost ground. Both Ruenzori and Petrarch have been off the track for some time and might find the going too fast. Park Acre, Moonlight Bay,. Ngaitahu were Marton runners, who did not impress. Rover’s Joy ran well at Dannevirke and Hethers scored a second at the recent Hawke’s Bay meeting. Horses who may find favour, however, are Gladium Lacan ' Kohika 12.40—

In view of Glenvane’s win at Marton that horse is sure to be popular in the Manawatu Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Royal King is, of course, entered in a previous race and may not be a starter. However, if he does start he is certain to command support. Wykemist must be given every chance and will probably be well liked by the public. Lady Callaghan was a good third in the Hunt Cup at Marton and is improving all the lime. She is about due for a win. Royal Toast’s win in the big steeplechase event at the recent Hawke's Bay meeting will produce support for that horse. Sir Acre and Blue Steel do not look good enough, and support may be offering for

The Hack Cup will probably cause the punter more anxiety than any other race on the programme. Seyfried and Auto Sweep if in form are good horses. Aurora's Star will probably gain a fair percentage of support, while Haile Selassie will not go wanting. This horse has been knocking at the door for some time and a win is long overdue. Golden Memory might be fancied; so might Little Robin and Gaiwind. Peach King might upset calculations but horses finding favour may include

Little is known of the form of the runners in the Maiden Race. Those who have shown promise, however, include Big Wave. Colibri, Modern Way, Patahi. Parian. The Smiler, Flying Flag and Split Second. Royal Sign raced at Marton and looks a useful sort. Modern Way has recently run two good races at Hastings. Those finding favour in an open event may include Royal Sign The Smiler Modern Way

Although Big Boy did not impress at Marton he is a good horse and if in form will give the rest of the runners; something to think about. ’ Artful Dodger scored a third at the Otaki Maori meeting in June, but in that race the distance proved too great. The shorter race might be to his liking as the weight is not too much. Royal King, who ran a splendid race at Mar-1 ton in the Rangitikci Hunt Cup Steeplechase will probably be well supported. Contact won impressively at Hawke’s Bay on July 15 and will not be far distant when the numbers go up. Princess Isabel scored a poor third in the Rosebank Hack Hurdles at Rangitikci and docs not appear classy enough. Hunting Lore, a newcomer over the sticks, jumped brilliantly at Marton and will be liked. The Tramp and Tigrcterre were competitors in tire same event but did not measure up to the brilliance of Hunting Lore. Sunbeam and Stargono should make the going interesting. Those followed up may include I ...Royal King Contact ■ Hunting Lore

. Guiding Light 8 3 Girl Pat .. ..8 0 The Hack Handicap, the last race oi the day. will probably provide one of the best finishes. Lord Moutoa will carry top weight and is expected tc run a good race. Hagen ran at Hawke’s Bay recently for the first time for two i months, and put up quite a creditable showing. Liberal’s Mint must command I respect, while Screen Star Lindrum and To Orc are sure to be followed up by a large section of the public. Conversion. Maturity and Golden Enterprise will not give the top weights toe much liberty. Support, however, may conic for

2.0— OPEN HANDICAP. Seven furlongs.

Gay Chou is quite capable of winning in this company, but might be in need of a race or two. Lady Montana will, of course, be well supported, as she is in great form. Old Surrey ran third in the Winter Oats on the last day at Trentham and must be given a chance in this event. Tidewaiter and Hunting Mint are both in fine fettle and will be well backed. Winsome Lu and Mataroa .cannot be ove;~ looked. El Meynell. Liane and Cuisinior are certain to be on hand for most of the journey. Reipar failed at Marton but must be given a chance. Lucullus Eoy is in form, and Flying Acre can bo depended on to give the top weights a run for the decision. In an <
