HOSPITAL COSTS
CRITICISM AT COUNTIES CONFERENCE.
TOO MUCH BEING SPENT.
(By Telegraph—Press Associa' ! on.) WELLINGTON July 26.
Hospital rating was a burning hot Question amongst all county councils, said Mr C. J. Talbot, of Fairlie. in his presidential address at the biennial conference of the New Zealand Counties’ Association. This, he said, was due to the steep ascent in the financial requirements of hospital boards. The main causes of the increase in hospital expenditure were:— (1) People were becoming more hospital minded.
(2) An increase in staffs. (3) An increase in the cost of provisions and drugs. (4) The demand for bettor surgical and medical equipment. (5) Renovations of some hospitals.
County councils were unanimous that too much money was being spent on hospitals and not enough on roads. They also felt that there was little justification today for any increase in taxation on the land to meet the cost of rapidly increasing social services, especially since the prices paid for primary' products were unstable and comparatively low.
