Mount Somers, became of its central position in the island and the plentiful supply there of cheap coal, was suggested by Mr H. J. Crothers at a meeting of the Ashburton Electric Power Board as a suitable site for the standby steam plant in the South Island which it is proposed should be built in case of any shortage in bulk power supply. At a recent conference of power supply authorities with the Minister for Public Works (the Hon R. Semple), the Minister was impressed with the proposal to establish steam plants in both islands to guard against a shortage of power.
