Guests at the Hotel Midland include Messrs J. Gillies, Gunn (Palmerston North), J. Hazelwood (Upper Hutt) and J. Miller (Wellington). Messrs H. Simms, Dorizac, McCarthey, Jenkins (Wellington) and Ashby (Palmerston North) are among guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel.

The Wellington Harbour Board, at its meeting last night, recorded its regret at the death of Mr Charles Edward Daniell, a member of the board from 1903 to 1923, and chairman from 1915 to 1919. The chairman, Mr M. A. Elliott, said that the late Mr Daniell had a notable record in public life.

At the reception given by the New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan) at the Mayfair Hotel, Squadron Leader Clouston was presented with the Royal New Zealand Aeronautical Society’s plaque in recognition of his distinguished achievements in aviation. It is the first occasion on which the plaque has been awarded. Mr Frank Jenner Brooker, formerly accountant to the Stores Control Board, died suddenly in Khandallah on Tuesday, aged 64 years. The late Mr Brooker as a young man was prominent in Rugby football in Christchurch, and played for several seasons for the Merivale Club. He was selected; to represent New Zealand in one of the first teams sent to Australia. The death occurred at Auckland yesterday of Mr William Thomas (“Billy”) Murphy, aged 77, once champion featherweight boxer of the world, after a long illness. He lived alone in the Arch Hill district and was a familiar figure about the city till he was taken to hospital several weeks ago. Requiem Mass-will be held at the Sacred Heart Church, Ponsonby, on Friday morning.

The funeral of the late Mr Frank Herbert look place at Pongaroa yesterday. The Rev L. F. Owen conducted services at the residence and graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs S. F., H., W., and G. Herbert (sons), E. Knowles (son-in-law) and V. Heath. Among the many floral tributes were wreaths from the Manager and staff of Messrs Dalgety and Co Ltd. and the Akitio Sheep Dog Trial Club.

At the conference of the New Zealand Institute of County Clerks, the following officers were elected: —President, Mr F. H. Hudson (Horowhenua); vice-presidents, Messrs G. Kelly (Ashburton), E. Ashcroft (Manakau); secretar yand treasurer, Mr J. W. Harding (Hawera); auditor, Mr G. Darbyshire (Wanganui); executive council, Messrs E. A. Mahoney (Hauraki Plains), C. L. J. Campbell (Stratford), D. Crooks (Dannevirke), L. J. Collins (Waimate), D. J. Evans (Hokitika), H. C. Gimblett (Invercargill), and H. H. Richardson (Rangitikei). The death occurred in Raetihi recently of Mr Leonard Wright better known as Mr Donald Cowen Wright. Born at Priestlaw, East Lothian, Scotland, in 1868. the late Mr Wright had resided in Raetihi for 26 years. He came to New Zealand at the age of 19 and began his career on a sheep station in the Wairarapa under the late Mr: (“King") Riddiford. Later he managed the Erewhon Station for the late Mr W. J. Birch. While there he bred some outstanding P.A. cattle. During his lifetime ho judged at numerous shows. Mr Wright is survived by eight sons and three daughters. The death occurred in Napier during the weekend of Mr Horace William Samuel Ruffell, who. till his retirement some years ago. was Collector of Customs in Napier. Born in 1874 in Nelson. Mr Ruffell was educated at Bridge Street School. Nelson, and Nelson College. He joined the Customs Department in Wellington at the age of 17, and later served in Timaru. .After a further period in Wellington Mr Ruffell was appointed to the position of Collector of Customs in Oamaru, being later in Auckland and Dunedin. In 1923 he became collected in Invercargill. where he remained till 1929. when he was appointed to Napier, a positicii which he held till his retire-' ment. Mr Ruffell leaves a widow, two sons and two daughters.
