NINETY=SIXTH BIRTHDAY
CELEBRATED BY MRS E. ROCKEL. OLDEST NEW ZEALAND-BORN WOMAN. Born in Wellington in 1843, Mrs E. Rockel, who is believed to be the oldest New Zealand-born woman, celebrated her 96th birthday yesterday. Mrs Rocket's parents were Mr and Mrs T„ U. McKenzie, who later took up farming at Bulls on the site of the present Flock House station.
After her marriage, Mrs Rockel lived in Masterton for a few years, and afterward lived in the Carnarvon district near Feilding for 40 years. On the death of her husband about 19 years ago she went to Wanganui to live with one of her daughters, Miss C. Rockel, of the teaching staff of the Wanganui Girls’ College. She had a family of eight sons and four daughters, all of whom, with the exception of three of the sons, are still alive.
A number of relatives live in the Masterton district.
