INTERESTING ADDRESS AT OPTIMIST CLUB MEETING. Chief Smiler Allan Handyside presided over a fair attendance of mem hors at the weekly meeting of th( Y.M.C.A. Optimists' Cluub last evenmi-;. After a tasty meal had been served Deputy- Sherrif Alan Sanson laid : variety of charges against several o! the Optimists, most of whom were found guilty and accordingly treated After business matters had been deal with, an enjoyable song session wu' hold.
Mr V. Joseph then gave members an interesting talk on "The Suez Cana and Egypt." The speaker had spent r. fortnight in those parts some years ag' as a result of the ship they were trav elling to England in having met with an accident while negotiating the canal. Mr Joseph said that the com pany controlling the canal was Frenel though most of the canal pilots weriDutch or English. Boats having an ex plosive cargo, such as oil or ammunition. were given right of way whei sailing through, this being done as a safety measure. For many miles on the southern side of the canal was a fresh water irrigation canal, a roac. separating it from the main canal. Mr Joseph gave a brief dc-eription < ' Cairo, its museum and um cisity especially. and then described the pyr.i mids. though he considered that Im sphinx was more interesting than tn. pyramids.
