J. HEMI FAREWELLED

BIG GATHERING LAST NIGHT.

(“Times-Age” Special.)

The Te Ore Ore meeting house was well filled last night when a final farewell dance was held in honour of Jack Henri, who is leaving on a tour of England and France as a member of the All Black League football team. On his arrival at the hall. Mi’ Hemi was given a real Maori welcome, led by Mrs H. Morris. After supper. Mr J. Reiri, speaking on behalf of the Wairarapa people, said he was sure all of Mr Hemi’s pakeha friends, as well as the Maoris, would wish him every success on his tour. He then called on Mr L. Pike, as their Maori friend, to make the presentation of a well-filled wallet. Mr Pike said he was very much honoured at being asked to make the presentation. Mr Hemi was born and reared in Te Whiti. and was a descendant cf a very high-class tribe. Mr Pike wished him the best of luck, and a safe return to his native home. On behalf of the Homewood Maoris. Mr H. Morris, wished Mr Hemi “foolball boots and jersey” and kia ora. while on the tour.

Speaking for Wairarapa baseball players. Mr Curtin said Mr Hemi was a great player and a great sportsman. Mrs L. Pike said she was proud that Jack Hemi had been selected and she wished him and his team mates every success, and "kia tai toa ti aki i" (take care of yourself). , In his reply. Mr Hemi thanked everyone for what they had done for him and took the opportunity to express special thanks to his uncle. Mr J. Reiri, and to Mr and Mrs L. Pike and Mrs Kelly Mark for making the function such a great success.

All present sang for “He's a Jolly Good Fellow."

Dancing was then enjoyed. Mr L Pike being the M.C, and Mrs Te Tau and her melody makers providing the music. The winner of the Monte Carlo waltz were Miss A. Rogan and Mr Leslie Fulton.

In conjunction with Mr Hemi’s relatives. the supper arrangements were carried out by the Te Ore Ore ladies' committee.

The evening was brought to a close with everyone taking the opportunity of saying au rovoir to Jack Hemi with a warm handshake and the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." and the National Anthem.
