JUNIOR FOOTBALL
OPAKI v. CARTERTON.
(By “Touchline.-”)
Opaki won the toss and wisely played against the wind in the first spell against Carterton on Saturday. Within fifteen minutes, Steffert accepted a pass from Warrington and cut through to score a fine try, no goal resulting. From a scrum in mid-field Chisnail worked the blind side to send Costello away. The latter was thrown to touch. A great forward rush by Carterton carried play to the Opaki line, where Morecock went over for a try. The kick failed. Several scrums on the Carterton line ended in Howie divingover for a try. L. Morgan’s kick failed. There was no further score in this half.
With the wind behind them Opaki put in some gruelling rushes to smother the Red backs and carry everything before Them. Chisnall at half was playing splendidly, setting Clarke away with M. Morgan and Gorringe to support. From one of these movements Morgan went over for a try, no goal resulting. An infringement near the Red’s 25 flag gave L. Morgan a chance and he kicked a fine goal. Chisnall again sent to Costello, who brushed past the opposition to score near the posts, L. Morgan converting with a nice kick. The game ended Opaki 14. Carterton 6.
The losers played a good clean game their forwards to a man going well. Blake brothers. McPhee, S. Warrington and Oliver were conspicuous in loose work, Morecock, J. Corlett and Geange being excellent in line-out and scrum work. Warrington did his work well. Stefi'ert, A. Deller and Hurley combined nicely but were too closely watched to get far. Adams, C. Deller and Linehan played fine football. Opaki forwards were perhaps better than Carterton. Howie led the dribbling rushes in great style, followed by Larsen, Condon, Roigard and Peters and Allen, Seymour and Taplin excelled in the tight. The latter was injured and replaced by 11. Chapel. Chisnall gave a faultless display at half. Clarke combined nicely with M. Morgan and Gorringe in several passing rushes. Costello was in great form, as usual, his powerful runs Doing hard to stop. Hunt, the other winger, got through his work safely. Mr E. Grantham, now recognised as one of the best referees in Wairarapa. controlled the game excellently.
Opaki will hold a dance at Mauriceville the week after next, the date to be advertised in the "Times-Age.
