SHEETS AND COMFORT

SOLVING A PROBLEM. If we had lived 400 years ago in “Merrie England” we should have known nothing of the comfort and cleanliness of sheets. The richer folk had feather beds an'd an ample supply of quilts, but what they regarded with pride would be condemned as primitive today.

The poorer folk gathered together what materials they could, including old clothes made of russet cloth, and m the cold months slept in their day clothes.

Another point about sheets relates to economy. Every house-manager knows that, however good a sheet may be. the wearing part is down the centre along the line of the body. Sheets can be bought that are reinforced along that central section ,but ordinary sheets can be re-made to solve the problem. ■r U P the sheet in sunlight, and if the centre-length section shows wear and looks thin proceed as follows: Cut the sheet in half, lengthwise, reverse the pieces, pin or tack the selvedges together at intervals all along, and seam to form the new centre. This has to be done carefully. The central seam must be a neat piece of work. There is your new sheet with the former strong sides transferred Io the middle.
