MINIATURE RIFLES
WAIRARAPA MEETING
SHOOTING OF HIGH STANDARD
CHAMPIONSHIP TO L. HARE
The annual championship meeting of the Wairarapa Miniature Rifle Association was held on Saturday last in the Crown Theatre. Greytown, and the gathering was the most successful held since the inception of the Association meetings in 1917. when the champion ship was fired in Carterton with two matches of 7 shots each. Since then the Association, under able management, has increased its programme and to day it consists of twelve matches. On Saturday competitors were present from most clubs from Palmerston North to Wellington and the entries were a record for the Association, 140 shooters being present. The executive worked hard throughout the day and their efforts brought a full measure of success. The first shoot was fired at 1.15 p.m. and the last just on midnight about 1 600 rounds of ammunition being fired in that time. The target stewards, range officers (controlled b\ Mr R. P. Wakelin) and' scrutineers Messrs C. J. Nix. W. Johnson. P. A. Wilton and D. J. Flynn, with assistance, carried out their work well. The secretary. Mr C. J. DeLacey, assisted by Mr H. Rolls, did yoeman service throughout the day and it was princi pally due to their efforts that the meet ing was so successful.
At the conclusion of shooting tin president. Mr W. Johnson, thanked the competitors for their attendance anc making the gathering the success i was. He hoped that next year thej would shoot under more favourable conditions. The fact that only five competitors were able to score the possible was due to the use of metric tar gets which are undoubtedly a stiffei proposition than the ordinary match target. Nevertheless the shooting on the whole was of a high standard. The president hoped that they would comeback to Wairarapa again next year. Hr then presented Colonel H. E. Hart’s shield and the Association’s gold medal to the champion shot of the meeting Mr L. Hare, whose shooting was remarkable. He only dropped 3 shots in 400. He congratulated Mr Hare anc called for cheers for him which were lustily given. He also presented troph ies given by himself to the best shoot ers in the combined pairs, Miss B. Cal der and Mr L. Hare, with a score ol 586. The following are results: —
