FEATHERSTON

WRESTLING MATCH

FEATHERSTON v. PETONE.

(“Times-Age" Special.)

There was a large audience at the Town Hall on Saturday night—amongst whom were a good number of ladies and girls—to witness perhaps one of the best tournaments seen here for some time. In all 14 bouts were staged. The decisions of the referee (Mr Ned Perry) in all bouts, met with applause. The rounds (three) were each of three minutes duration, with the exception of the last one, between the local man. Jim Dryden, New Zealand amateur heavyweight champion, and Stan -William, heavyweight champion of Otago, which was of five three-min-ute rounds, the verdict going to Dryden, who gained a submission fall by an arm-lock in the third round. One of the surprises of the evening was that of young Alex McLeod, practically a new wrestler, who gained a fall in the first round over the more experienced and scientific Petone boy. The results of the contests were easily in Featherston's favour, the local team winning seven and Petone 3, with four drawn bouts.

The tournament was declared open by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Card). Mr S. A. Mannering (Masterton) was the announcer.
