CANADIAN REINDEER

PROVISION OF FOOD. CLOTHING AND TRANSPORT. EDMONTON. Canada’s reindeer enterprise continues to make satisfactory progress and with the completion of . another successful season on the inland winter range, the main herd, now comprising about 3,500 head has been moved to the fawning grounds on Richards Island, a short distance off the Canadian Arctic coast. This enterprise was undertaken by the Canadian Government to provide the Eskimo with reindeer for food, clothing and transportation. The original herd brought to the Canadian Northland in 1936 has multiplied considerably. From this main herd a smaller one of 900 animals has been turned over to the natives and like the one at Richards Island, has wintered well and has been moved to satisfactory fawning grounds where ample food supplies are available. The natives entrusted with this smaller herd are under the direct supervision of the chief government.
