CHURCH NEEDED

FOR BISHOP OF AOTEAROA

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

Hastings, July 21

“The Bishop of Aotearoa is the only bishop in New Zealand without his own church and we are very anxious that one should be provided for him,” said Mr I. Robin in Hastings today, commenting on suitable memorials for the forthcoming centennial celebrations. “So while my people will assist in every possible way, we are desirous of moving in the direction of providing Bishop Bennett with a new Maori church in Kohupatiki. We already have about £5OO available, but we cannot undertake it without at least £lOOO so it is possible that we may be able to increase the funds through the centennial.”

Mr Robin mentioned when he returned recently from India Bishop Bennett brought back a special granite corner stone and intimated that this stone, which was a gift from the Christian people of India, would be used as the foundation stone of the first Maori church to be built after his return.

“We are anxious that the stone should be used in the bishop’s own church and that the church should be erected in Kohupatiki, which is the bishop’s home,” Mr Robin added.
