SKETCH CLUB

ENJOYABLE GUEST AFTERNOON. MANY VALUABLE TREASURES DISPLAYED. The Sketch Club held a very enjoy able guest afternoon in the Country Women’s Club Room yesterday. The room was comfortably filled. Eacl member brought something of interesi to be admired and discussed. Although the Sketch Club is but a small part of the community, it was ver pleasing to see the varied ' materia! brought and the keen interest shown. There were several good paintings am etchings, among them being a Van Dei Velden, Whistler, Turner, Stoddart Bousfield. Barraud, Ash, Baird and Aitken. Of special interest were a book of hand-painted New Zealand flower; by the late Mrs Hosking, a beautiful print of Baxters, a wee etching don by Wendla Boreel (this was the Stab coach done for Queen Mary’s doll house), a small painting by the Frencl artist Vaseille, done on the lid of ; cigarette box for a relative of the exhibitor and a wonderful Japanesi brush picture of a blind Japanese mas seur. The other exhibits created grea interest, they being either very old great curiosities or very beautiful There was a lovely Ming figure. 300 tc 600 years old; a gold watch 200 yearsold; a silver coaster for holding a bot tie, 200 years old; an exquisite silver candle snuffer 100 years old; a pair ol white kid boots worn at a dance ii 1850; a seal brought to New Zealand in 1835: two curious buttons from : mandarin’s hat; old tokens of the Presbyterian Church to be presented beforebeing admitted to communion; an ok memorial medallion made of hair; a jewel box with a miniature from Rom ney in the lid; a beautifully worked old Indian shawl; an old Wedgewood plate; a perfect piece of pettit point worked in Vienna with a piece of material showing the work involved; an old carved Maori paddle and a very lovely miniature done by a member’s late relative.

During the afternoon two competitions on artists and their various works resulted in a win for Mrs Ramsay anc Miss Robinson.
