FEATHERSTON
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. ("Times-Age" Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston school committee there were present —Messrs J. W. Holland (chairman), C. C. Kenward (secretary), W, Jeffrey, C. J. Carylon, F. A. O’Neale, J. Higgison, C. Buck, J. W. Henderson and S. Murphy. A credit balance was reported of £5B 3s lOd. Accounts amounting to £lO Is lOd were passed for payment. A letter was received from the Wellington Education Boarding asking the Committee to confirm the application from the Chief Commissioner for New Zealand of the Girl Guides’ Association for the use of the school buildings to provide accommodation for some ol the Australian Girl Guides attending the Centennial Guides celebrations. The necessary confirmation will be forwarded. The Rev Father Devlin wrote making application to impart moral instruction to the children of his denomination on Tuesday morning of each week. The secretary's action in granting this request was endorsed. A letter of resignation was received from Miss Jean Brash, who has left to reside in Martinborough. The resignation was received with regret. The Education Board advised the committee that they could not give permission for the use of the cookery room as a class room. At an early date an officer of the Board will inspect the building being used temporarily for a class room with a view to making same more suitable for school purposes. It was decided to leave Arbor Day celebrations in the hands of the headmaster. OBITUARY WELL-KNOWN RESIDENTS. There died in Featherston on Wednesday night, Mr Joseph Hewitson at the age of 59 years. He leaves a wife and no family. He had been in the district for 20 years. The funeral will take place tomorrow. The death occurred last night of Mr Samuel Bingham McLeod. He was 85 years old. Born in Belfast he came to New Zealand many years ago, and had lived in the district for 22 years. He had worked for the H. Matthew’s estate for 12 years. His wife pre-de-ceased him 10 years ago. The funeral will take place tomorrow. The death took place at Featherston oh Wednesday night of Mr William Fuge, at the age of 80 years. He was a well-known and highly respected settler of the district. The funeral took place today.
BAND CONCERT EXCELLENT ENTERTAINMENT LAST NIGHT. MANY ASSISTING ARTISTS. An excellent entertainment was presented in Featherston last night by the Masterton Municipal Band and assisting artists, the proceeds being in aid of the band’s uniform fund. The Mayor. Mr J. ,W. Card, extended a warm welcome to the band and said he was sure Featherston people were only too pleased to give it assistance, as the band had played at the Anzac Day services in Featherston for the past 18 years. The band played outside the hall prior to the commencement of the evening’s programme. Items were contributed by the following:—Te Tati’s Orchestra; cornet duct by the Band; Miss Betty Smith (recitation); Zara (sleight of hand); Mr Kay (vocal solos), Misses Hazel Locke and Waireka Nini (dance duo), Bandsman Adams (recitation), Mr Leo Chung (Chinese tenor). D. Tagg (violin solo, accompanied by his sister), B. Irvine (humorous items), Zara and Kay (sketch), and Miss Locke (skipping dance). The Misses Tockcr played the accompaniments. A ladies’ committee entertained the band and performers at supper. The band is indebted to the following for assistance: Messrs Snelgrove, Kerslake, Davis, Flaws. Parker, Byrn, Boston and Irvine. Special praise is due to Mr W. L. Butler for his untiring efforts in organising the concert and in other ways.
Personal Items.
Word has been received from the Defence Department that Major G. S. Sharp, New Zealand Medical. Corps has been awarded the efficiency decoration. which is granted to certain officers for long service. Dr and Mrs G. S. Sharp have returned from a weekend visit to Hastings and Napier.
Mr W. Crawford has returned home from the Masterton Hospital, where he had been an inmate for the past few weeks.
