Mr C. V. Freedman, who for the last six months has been acting secretary for the , Automobile Association (Hawke’s Bay), has been appointed permanent secretary.
At a meeting of members of the Masterton Master Builders’ Industrial Union of Employers held on Tuesday evening last, a vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr C. E. Daniell.
Mrs Cross and Mr Earl Cross, of Bannister Street, Masterton, are motoring to Wairoa to attend the marriage of Mr Owen Cross, which will take place on Saturday evening. Mr O. Cross, who is a member of the Wairoa Post Office staff, has received notice of his transfer to Inglewood.
Rex King, of Canterbury, a former Rugby representative, who recently returned from England, after playing the League code with the Warrington club, has been appointed captain of the New Zealand League team to tour England. R. Banham, last year’s Australian player-coach, was appointed vice-captaim Dr Frederick Staton, D.Mus.. F.R.C. 0., L.R.A.M., conductor of the Sheffield Philharmonic Society, who is to conduct the examinations in New Zealand this year for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, is due to arrive at Auckland from Canada on Monday. He will stay in New Zealand for six months. The funeral of the late Mrs G. H. Kummer, which took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon, was largely attended. Canon J. H. Sykes conducted a service at St Matthew’s Church and also officiated at the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths were sent by sympathisers. The pall bearers were Messrs J. Cunningham, N. Kummer, F. Horner, E. Evans, C. E. Holmwood, and E. Holmwood.
Mr lan Lauder, formerly of Christchurch and a graduate of Canterbury University College, has received the degree of doctor of philosophy at Manchester University. Dr Lauder is 25 years of age. He was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, and had a distinguished career at Canterbury College. He gained the B.Sc. degree in 1936, with a senior scholarship in chemistry. The following year he graduated to M.Sc.. gaining also an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship. tenable at Manchester University. Dr Lauder has been offered a senior award for three years in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in England.
