MUTTON & LAMB
FURTHER QUOTA PREDICTED BY MR COATES. (By Telegraph—Pr.ess Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A prediction that the United Kingdom quota on mutton and lamb imported from New Zealand would probably be restricted by 10 per cent or even 121 per cent was made by the Rt Hon J. G. Coates (Opposition, Kaipara) speaking in the Address-in-Re-ply debate in the House of Representatives last night. Mr Coates referred to the present restriction of 3 per cent, and said that the arrangements made by the present Government were anything but favourable to the meat producer. Already there was a quota, and the cold stores of the country were packed to the roof with carcases. A Government member: “Increased production.” In reply to further interjections, Mr Coates said that the market instead of expanding would contract, and further restrictions seemed likely.
