GOLF NOTES

4 RIVERSIDE CLUB GAMES CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY. FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND. (By “Long Drive.”) The first qualifying round for the championship was played by the mem bers of the Riverside Golf Club on Saturday. The conditions were ideal for golf and many good cards were handed in. F. Candy started out very unsteadily on Saturday, taking fives for the first two holes, but from them on he settled down and handed in a card of 71 net.

A player who has been improving every week is W. Gemmell, and it will not be long before he has his handicap reduced. Taking a 9 at the short third was this player's downfall.

G. Jones played to within one stroke of his handicap on Saturday, after re cording a “six" at the first and fourteenth holes.

B. L. Larsen could not get the usual distance from the tees, but played to his handicap after taken three strokes over par on three holes.

S. Onion has at last been able to control his shots and played below his handicap on Saturday, recording a net 68. A great round was played on Saturday by W. Palamontain. who. after going out in 44, could do nothing wrong doing the second 9 in 38. This player is “Long Drive’s” pick to head the list in the Intermediate Championship. F. Pool does not worry how far his tee shots go as on Saturday he was so accurate with his irons he was on the greens every time for his second, but weak putting is this player’s handicap. Going out in 43 his card read 3. 4, 5. 5. 5,3, 4,4, 3- —36, two over par, for the home journey. S. L. Pye found the going rather difficult last weekend. After hitting a long tee shot he was in the sand pits around the greens for his second. When he can get more control with his irons the sand pits and bunkers will be no trouble.

The usual steady round was played by B. Summers. Had it not been for taking sixes at the Bth, 13th and 18th holes he would have had an excellent card. At the short 10th this player recorded a birdie 2. »

D. Costello did not play as well as expected on Saturday but he had a real day out on Sunday at Tinui, doing 76 off the stick. His card for the 9 holes read 6, 4. 4, 4. 4. 4,3, 3. 5- —37. G. Beecroft has been improving every week and again on Saturday he played below his handicap and has had it reduced accordingly. MAHUNGA CLUB COMMENT ON RECENT PLAY. (By “Par.”) On Saturday last a bogey competition was played by members of the Mahunga Golf Club under ideal conditions.

G. R. Ward in handing in a card of 2 up on bogey played 4 strokes below his handicap—a very good effort. Ward has been absent from the game for a short while and the rest obviously has been of benefit to him. As a result a reduction in handicap has been handed out to him.

I. McFarlane in handing in a card of 1 down did not strike the form expected of him although his performance is around his handicap mark. A 7 at “Never Despair” was a ruination. A. S. McGregor was next in line with 2 down. McGregor went well on the first nine to record a 37 but fell down on the homeward run. However his medal card revealed his play to be 1 stroke above his handicap. Two further matches in the captain's trophy games were played over the weekend. C. Sandbek defeated W. N. A. Hosking 1 up at the 18th. In their previous game these players finished all square and Saturday’s result proved again that there was very little between them. R. Lendrum’s win over R. B. McPherson in the semi-final was an exhibition of sheer determination combined with match play experience. After losing the first 4 holes both turned for home with Lendrum 3 down and still one stroke to concede. Striking form over the last nine holes whilst his opponent fell away he was able to take the match 2 up. Tomorrow the second qualifying round of the ladies' trophy competition is to be played. As is the case in all medal rounds, players are requested to see that their putts are actually in the hole before their score is recorded. There are inclined to be far too many putts conceded, which in itself is against all rules of the game. One must remember that if he is a party to a conceded putt in any medal round he, besides his partner, is liable to disqualification.
