SPORT OF KINGS OVERSEAS

PERSONAL AND OTHERWISE. During last month George Price maintained his lead in the trainers list for Sydney metropolitan and provincial courses. He has produced 28 winners for the term, and running second to him is B. R. Payten with 25 winners. With the exception of Ajax, the bookmakers with charts on the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups double are looking outside Victoria for the winners of these big races this year. The order of favouritism following the appearance of the weights was: Caulfield Cup. 11 miles, run October 21. —Ajax, Feminist. Malagigi, Mildura, Millie’s Hope, Mosaic, Spear Chief, and St Constant; and Bonny Loch, Early Bird, El Golca. Footmark, Gilltown, Marauder, Nightguard, Ortelles Star. Pageant, Reading, Son of Aurous, Tel Astir. Tempest, The Trump. Wilson, Zonda. Melbourne Cup. two miles, run November 7. —Defaulter. Spear Chief; Ajax, Aurania, Bonny Loch. High Caste, Malagigi, Mosaic. Pageant, Wilson. Zonda; and Aspire. Catalogue, Ccoranga, Feminist. Footmark. L'Aiglon. Marauder. Millie's Hope, Ortelles Star, Pure Gold, Son of Aurous. Vergure. a three-year-old Irish colt by Flaming Orb from Centolina, and having his first race in Australia, comfortably won the first division of the Novice Handicap at Richmond _ (Sydney) recently. He was the medium of heavy wagering and started a hot favourite. Mr A. Frauenfielder owns Vergure, the colt having been imported to Australia a few months ago. After his arrival he was discovered to be suffering from foot trouble, and his trainer, M. Laidlaw, decided that a spell would benefit him. The colt did well during his brief holiday and made rapid progress when placed in training at Victoria Park. Before being purchased for Australia, Vergure had won two races at Baldoyle, Ireland—the Shiel-Martin Plate, worth £79. and the Stewards’ Plate, worth £7B. The Windsor Novice Handicap at Richmond was for horses who had not won a flat race exceeding the value of £5O to the winner, but as two-year-old races were exempted both Cergure and Novice became eligible.

Comment has been levelled at the Victorian stipendiary stewards in their action recently in fining the leading jockey, H. Badger, £2O for a breach of the rules at Flemington. Manrico, in a straight six furlong event, was drawn on the outside of the track. However, Badger took his' mount straight over to the inside rail and won, retaining first place in face of a protest. Previously Melbourne officials have taken a more serious view when riders have deviated slightly from the straight line on the straight course at Flemington, and suspension has followed without exception. It was a matter for discussion, therefore, that in Badger’s ease he was let off with a nominal fine for what has been regarded previously as a serious breach.
