ABOUT HORSES

DEFAULTER'S PLANS ALTERED

The plans for Defaulter's visit to Australia have undergone a slight change. F. A. Roberts has decided to delay his departure till early in August, when he will travel by the same steamer as F. D. Jones. Being anxious to secure a working mate for Defaulter, Roberts has bought Mungatoon for Mr H. D. Greenwood. The gelding has recovered from the trouble that affected him at Trentham, and he is again in work.

Survey has done well since winning the Wellington Steeplechase and, all going well during the next three weeks, will be a starter in the Grand National Steeplechase, in which A. E. Ellis will ride him.

A trip to Melbourne is said to be in view for two Otago horses, Strip and Boloyna, the latter being the three-year-old brother to Alma. The intention is to leave soon after the Grand National meeting.

A report from Dunedin states that the hurdler, Fireguard, caught a severe chill on his journey home from Trentham, and he has been in a bad way since his return.

Amigo has been an absentee from the track since he returned to Trentham, after his successful Trentham trip. His leg filled as the result of injuries he sustained through kicking himself, and though the trouble is not serious it will prevent him from fulfilling immediate engagaments.

Lowenberg has gone on the right way since he returned home to Wanganui, after racing at Trentham. He has thrown off the soreness which formerly troubled him, and he should do well in the spring. He has engagements in Australia, including the Melbourne Cup, a race which should suit him, as he has proved his ability to stay.

Easily the biggest of the rising two-year-olds in training at Ellerslie just now, is the Tiderace —Aureate filly, Goldrace, who is a member of R. S. Bagby’s string. Goldrace, who is a half-sister to Aureus and Dawning Light, comes from the same family as Desert Gold, Gold Trail, and Gold Rod, and she became the property of Mr J. L. Webb at the Trentham sales for 330 guineas.

F. D. Jones has made arrangements for Royal Chief to be ridden in most of his Australian engagaments by E. Bartie, who was associated with the horse last spring. There will be one exception, however, as Bartie is attached to J. T. Jamieson’s stable and probably he will be required for High Caste in the Chelmsford Stakes, but Jones does not anticipate much difficulty about securing a suitable rider for that race.

Two Stonyhurst stallions have been disposed of recently. Jericho, by Archery —Judith, is to be located in the Culverden district in the future, and Cricket Bat. by Winning Hit—Equipment, will be at Hornby. It does not appear as if Agog is likely to see the post at Riccarton. According to reports, he still shows signs of the injuries he received at the Great Northern meeting, and his trainer, I. Tucker, has not been able to do a great deal with him during the last few weeks. Mrs S. L. Parsons's horses. La Vic and Jonathan, who have been at Ellerslie during the last 12 months, are to be transferred to A. Cook’s stable at Te Awamutu.
