FAST ELECTRIC TRAIN

EFFICIENT FRENCH SERVICE. Travelling at an average speed of a trifle under 70 miles an hour, the new electric train service joins the capital of France to Bordeaux, a distance of 305 miles, in 5 hours 15 minutes. This forms part of the completely electrified line joining Paris to the Spanish frontier, a distance of 512 miles, the longest single electric trac tion line in Europe. Only for the sector Tours-Bordeaux, fed from a great distance with a current of 90,000 volts. 14 transformer stations have been built, one every 15 miles, for feeding current reduced to 1 500 volts. More than 12,000 tens of steel were used for the pylons, and more than 1,000 tons of aluminium.
