WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT ALFREDTON. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the July meeting of the Alfredton Women’s Institute there was a full attendance of members as well as visitors from Mauriceville and Tane. Mrs Hull presided and welcomed Miss R. Smith as a new member. The Ode to Friendship was sung and the prayer for peace rendered. Arrangements were made for the birthday social which is to be held on Friday, August 4, in the Alfredton Hall. Miss Ruth White gave a very interesting talk on her trip between New Zealand and Singapore. Mrs Forsberg demonstrated the making of woollen mops, which was very interesting. The competitions resulted: — Plain knitting: Mrs Clee, 1; Mrs Farrall, 2; Mrs Weston, 3. Fancy knitting: Miss R. Smith, 1; Mrs F. McLean, 2; Mrs Weston, 3. Best bloom: Mrs Dickens, 1; Mrs Weston, 2; Mrs George, 3. Mrs Hull proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer and demonstrator which was carried and presented each with a dainty shoulder spray. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Seymour, A. Edmonds and S. Edmonds.
The singing of the National Anthem brought the very pleasant gathering to a close.
KOPUARANGA MEETING.
The monthly meeting of the Kopuaranga Women's Institute was held in the hall when Mrs E. J. Wright presided over a fair attendance. Visitors were present from the Solway-Manaia Institute.
The meeting commenced with the singing of the Ode to .Friendship and the repeating of the Aspiration. Members decided to forward the donation to Wellington for Centennial funds.
The half-yearly council meeting is to be held at Martinborough on the second Thursday in October. Members agreed to enter the potato competition to be conducted by the executive.
Owing to her departure from the district, the resignation of Mrs H. Evans was accepted with regret. A debate is to take place at Mauriceville on August 1 between members of Kopuaranga and Mauriceville Women’s Institutes.
The roll call, “Spring Cleaning Hints,” was replied to by all members.
Mrs Munn (Solway-Manaia) entertained members by showing them how to make miniature gardens, woollen mats and Dresden patchwork articles, many articles being on exhibition. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded her.
The visitors judged the competitions, which resulted as follows:—Seniors: Cushion, Italian quilting, Mrs Wright 1, Miss Wright 2; oven cloth, Mrs Wright 1, Miss Wright 2, Mrs Clarke 3. Juniors: Miss D Kenny Best bloom. Mrs W. J. Cottle 1, Miss Wright 2, Mrs Kenny 3. Ginger cake, Mrs A. B. Cottle 1, Mrs E. C. Cottle 2, Mrs Clarke 3. Juniors: Miss D. Kenny. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. B. Cottle, S. J. Clarke, Miss Wright. The singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable meeting to a close.
