MOVING UPWARD
CANADA & WORLD TRADE. OTTAWA. Canada improved its position in world trade in 1938, moving from sixth to fifth place, displacing Japan. The United Kingdom held first place in total world trade last year, followed respectively by the United States. Germany, France and Canada. Canada maintained her position in 1938 as the world’s fourth largest exporting conn ■ try and eighth in respect to imports. Reduced prices were mainly responsible for reductions in the total value of Canada’s export and import trade. The value of Canadian exports in 1923 was 956 726,000 dollars, which if calculated at 1937 prices would have amounted to 1.009,051.000 dollars. Sim ilarly, imports at 677,451.000 dollars, if revalued at the previous year's price level, would have amounted to 696.015,000 dollars.
