INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES

METHODS OF SETTLEMENT DISCUSSED MINISTER AND PARTIES CONFER. FUTURE OF ARBITRATION SYSTEM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The question of evolving a more satisfactory method of dealing with industrial disputes in future was discussed at a conference at which the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, met representatives of the Federation of Labour, the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation and the New Zealand Employers’ Federation yesterday. The matters dealt with are to be considered separately by the organisations concerned and will be discussed again at another conference. When he announced his intention last week of calling the conference, the Minister said the Arbitration Court had found great difficulty in coping with' the amount of work coming before it, and he thought it might be advisable to discuss the constitution and working of the arbitration system with the representatives of the organisations directly interested. Following yesterday's conference he stated that the representatives of the workers and employers had agreed to consider the matters raised separately and to bring forward proposals at a future conference. “The discussions were of a most friendly nature,” Mr Webb said. “All the representatives present showed a keen desire to do their best to bring about whatever improvements may be necessary to achieve the desired result.”
