LADIES’ NIGHT

AT THE OPTIMIST CLUB. With the usual number present nearly doubled last night the weekly meeting of the Optimist Club in the Y.M.C.A. was a decided success. The increase in the attendance was due to the fact that it was “ladies night” and every member was required to bring a lady. Those members who failed to have with them a lady were fined by the Assistant Sherri C. A. Sanson.

Prior to the speaker of the evening being introduced all members introduced their lady friends. The Sherrifs Court, conducted by Sherrif G. C. Gaze, was again the cause of much amusement.

Padre T. Pearson led those present in a short programme of singing, the piano being played by Optimist L. Pither.

Mrs A. Fletcher was the speaker and her address. “Our Defence is Sure," was listened to with great interest. Having seen active service during the War as a nurse Mrs Fletcher’s remarks were consequently all the more interesting. Her description of "The Angels of Mons” and how they acted as a protection for the British Army in 1914 was indeed enlightening. Other incidents dealing with Britain’s defence were given, making the address a particularly interesting one. Chief Smiler A. Handyside, who occupied the chair, thanked Mrs Fletcher for her address and a short while was spent in a general discussion on the points raised by Mrs Fletcher.

Padre T. Pearson closed the meeting by pronouncing the benediction.
