SPORT OF KINGS OVERSEAS

PERSONAL AND OTHERWISE. One of the greatest disappointments at the Ascot meeting was the defeat of the King's filly. Great Truth, in the Queen Mary Stakes. She is by Bahram out of Frankly, and had won her one previous race at Manchester in delightful style. In the field of 28 two-year-old fillies, Great Truth was a hot favourite, but Lord Lonsdale’s Snowberry (leased from, the National Stud) proved victorious. Snowberry is a daughter of that great and popular filly Myrobella. and like her dam, she has the ability to get away from the gate like a rocket.

An English paper says that a romance connected with the Grand National winner, Workman, is that nobody knows the whereabouts of his dam. The late Dr O'Leary had a Santo! mare mated with Caricato. The progeny, a filly, was named Cariella, and in due course was mated with Cottage, producing Workman. So far as is known the latter was her only foal. After Dr O'Leary’s death Workman’s dam, then barren, was sold to Mr T. O'Donnell, who deals in horses in a big way in Ireland, and he resold her. It is said he kept no record of the buyer of Workman's dam, and it is not even known whether she is alive. Workman is eight years old. so if his dam commenced at the stud at four years she is not too old yet to produce another of the class of the Grand National winner. But she has to be found.

In England the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association has an experimental farm near Newmarket. It is under the supervision of a most capable veterinary surgeon. Mr Fred Day. whose operations on mares have been particularly successful. A notable recent instance was that of Plack. a One Thousand Guineas winner. After being barren since 193.3 she foaled this season to Obliterate. Plack is 18 years old.
