ABOUT HORSES
Paddy the Rip and Blenora Boy. now in Sydney, have joined J. T. Jamieson’s stable. Paddy the Rip had a remarkably fast rise from the maiden ranks to the best open company this season, in 13 starts running five firsts, five .seconds and a third.
Coalition, when he won the Wellington Steeplechase under 12.11. established a record that may never be equalled. Since 1928 or thereabouts a maximum of 12.0 has been in force, but only Billy Boy 11.3 and 11.5 and Valpeen 11.4 have been able to win with more than 10.4.
Since the establishment of the Trentham Hurdles (first day) and Winter Hurdles (third day) sequence, the Trentham Hurdles form has usually given a valuable clue to the Winter Hurdles result. Lucullent and Zircon were unexpected winners of the Winter Hurdles in the first years the sequence existed, 1925 and 1926 respectively. The next year was Nukumai’s year; but the Trentham winner, Wharncliffe, was second. In 1928 Beau Cavalier, who lost his rider in the Steeples, was the winner, with the Trentham Hurdles winner, Gaze, third. Overhaul won both races in 1929, Mister Gamp being second on each occasion, and Paddon (1932), Rasouli (1934), Revision (1935) and John Charles (1937) have been other horses to win both events. Last year Court Yard turned Trentham tables on Full of Scotch, after the latter had made the running to the final fence.
Another line that has sometimes given the result of the Winter Hurdles is the fourth horse in the Trentham Hurdles. Before his second success in 1933, Paddon had been fourth in the Trentham, Adventus, the Trentham winner, being runner-up in the Winter. Then, three years ago, the fourth horse in the Trentham, Travelling Agent, similarly improved to win the Winter Hurdles, from the Trentham victor. Black Marlin. The fourth horse this year was Fireguard.
Five times in the last 10 years the Trentham Hurdles winner has succeeded in the Winter Hurdles also. Overhaul captured the double in 1929, Paddon in 1932, Rasouli in 1934, Revision in 1935, and John Charles in 1937. In the other five races during the decade three winners of the Trentham Hurdles finished second in the Winter Hurdles. Nucleus, who was first in the Trentham Hurdles in 1930 did not start in the Winter Hurdles, and the other Trentham winner, Singleton. was the only one in 10 years to miss a place on the third day. Up till Rasouli’s win, the first-day winner was not liable to a,’ penalty, but last year Full o’Scotch was raised 101 b and as. a result was defeated by Court Yard.
