BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MARTINBOROUGH COUNCIL ERECTION OF STATE HOUSES. SATISFACTORY TENDER RECEIVED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Advice that a satisfactory tender had been received for the erection of five houses at Martinbofough was contained in a letter from the Director of Housing Construction which came before last night’s meeting of the Martinborough Council. Work, however, will not! commence until the transfer of the land to the Housing Department has been completed. The Town-'Clerk stated that the council’s solicitor hoped to have the matter straightened out in the near future.

Those present at the meeting were the Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill, Councillors M. N. Hardie, C. R. Holmes, M. Mulvaney, G. P. Cotter, P. Plummer, D. Green and A. Hamilton.

The Carterton Municipal Silver Band wrote stating that it had been informed that the council was calling in all instruments belonging to the Martinborough Municipal Band. “At the present time we are, reorganising the band here, and several of your players have consented to assist us,” the letter continued. "It would assist us greatly if these men could retain their instruments as this would save repossessing instruments from learners here with which to provide them. In return the Carterton Band would be only too pleased to come to Martinborough to assist at any function that require the services of a band.” The request was refused.

Advice was received from the Masterton County Council, as the distributing authority of heavy traffic licence fees for the No. 10 Heavy Traffic District, that the agreement in respect of the existing bases of the allocation of fees expired on May 31. The basis for allocation for the two years was: boroughs, 25 per cent and counties 75 per cent.

As the Masterton County was agreeable to a continuation of the present agreement for a further period of two years, the council decided to accept the terms as set out.

In compliance with,' a request by the Martinborough Fire Brigade, the Works Committee was instructed to have white rings painted round fire plugs in the main street.
