GUN CLUB GATHERING

FINAL SHOOT OF SEASON.

(“Times-Age” Special.)

The final shoot of the season was held by the South Wairarapa Gun Club at the Lake Ferry, when there was a large attendance of shooters and visitors. Conditions were fair and the shooting on the whole good. The final for the Tisdall Cup and the annual shoot for the Dumenga Cup were the chief events and resulted in a win for A. Warren, who secured 20 birds out of a possible 21 from the 11 yard marks, and will thus hold the Tisdall Cup. The conditions for the Dumenga Cup were the two best scores in the Tisdall Cup service. Warren secured 37 birds and W. Bussing 36. Following were the scores: —A. Warren, 11, 20; K. McLeod, 12, 19; C. McLeod, 13, 17; T. Skipage, 17, 17; N. Bussing, 17. 17; R. Fuge 12, 16; M. McLeod, 11, 16; M.’ Swainson, 12, 15; N. Hume, 11, 15; S. Mclntosh, 11, 15; H. Swanson, 11, 15; E. Glennie, 11, 15; T. Sargent, 11, 14; A. Swanson, 16, 14; S. Hall, 5, 13; B. Lepinski, 11, 12. The Levin and Co and Tisdall trophies were competed for after the chief events, but owing to the failing light several competitors did not complete their shoot. The winners were N. Swanson and N. Bussing respectively. The shooting in the main events was exceptionally good as 52 birds were broken before a miss was registered.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mrs Swainson presented the prizes and heartily congratulated Mr Warren on his excellent shooting. Mr Warren suitably replied. Mr Macdonald, on behalf of the club thanked the shooters for making the final day of the season so successful, and expressed the wish that next season would be as successful.

Personal Items.

Mr and Mrs Stan Jensen, who were the guests of Mr and Mrs Burling, have returned to their home in Napier. Mr Gilbert Munro is spending a few days with his mother, at Lower Hutt. Miss Makere Hutana is visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs W. Stuart are the guests of the latter's mother, Mrs J. O. Sutherland, Te Pare. Mr and Mrs D. Mclntosh and Mr C. Mclntosh, were the guests of Mr and Mrs O’Neil, Eketahuna, for the weekend. Mr V. Saunders who is at Rotorua, is making good progress towards recovery. He is now able to get about without the aid of crutches. There was a large gathering of relatives 'and friends at the residence of Mr and Mrs Sullivan, Martinborough, recently, the occasion being the coming of age of Maria, fifth daughter of Mr and Mrs Watene Turanganui. Interesting Lecture. A lecture by Mr Nairn and supported by lantern slides depicting the “Life of Christ” was given in the meeting house at Rohunui recently. There was a large attendance and the lecturer was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his most interesting address. Euchre Party and Dance. A euchre party arid dance was held in the hall on Saturday evening. Although the climatic conditions were most adverse, the attendance was fair. Mrs S. Mclntosh won the ladies’ prizes', and J. Riwai the men’s. A local band supplied the music for the dance. The proceeds were for the local candidate in the Queen Contest at the Green and Gold Ball on August 16. Rough Weather. The weather during the past week has been most severe. The storm reached its height on Sunday when snow, accompanied by a biting southerly raged all day. The high levels and low country are covered in snow. Fortunately the lambing season does not commence in this district till early in August. It is feared that with the mountainous seas running in the bay, the outlet of the lake will close again.

Golf Competitions.

A stableford competition was played by members of the local golf club, when Mrs Herangi and D. Jones were the winners.

The inter-club match against Hinakura was commenced on the local links at the weekend. The weather was fine, but cold. Play was only in progress a quarter of an hour when a snow storm commenced which continued all day. The match was abandoned.

Mr A. H. Warren, who was for a number of years the leading player in the local club has signified his intention of taking an active part in the competitions in the future. He will play in the eliminating rounds of the senior championship. Mr Warren’s reentry into active golf will be hailed with satisfaction by local and outside enthusiasts who know of his outstanding ability as a player. Besides he is always willing to impart his knowledge to younger players. In the ladies’ championship eliminating round for the Tuhitarata Cup, Mrs Carter beat Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Sutherland won from Mrs Cowan. Enjoyable Concert. A concert party from Wellington gave a most enjoyable entertainment in the hall on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance and the performers were well received. Green and Gold Ball. Attention is drawn to an advertisement which appears elsewhere of the fifth Green and Gold Ball and Queen Carnival, which is to be held in the Memorial Hall. Pirinoa, on Wednesday, August 16. As this event is considered one of the outstanding social functions of the year, it is expected to be as successful as in former years. Preparations are well-advanced. The Queen Contest run in conjunction with the ball will be an added feature and already supporters of the various candidates are working assiduously to ensure the return of their candidate. as Queen of the Ball. Udy's Band of eight instruments will supply the dance music.
