FOOTBALL MATCH

WAIRARAPA BEATS BUSH. FORWARDS CARRY THE DAY. Played at their own game, the Bush Rugby representatives went under to Wairarapa at Eketahuna on Saturday by nine points (two unconverted tries and a penalty goal) to nil. Heavy rain fell frequently during the game, and the ground was well cut up. Back play was. of course, entirely out of the question, the game developing into a forward battle.

Packing a solid scrum. Wairarapa obtained possession of the ball at will, while in the line-outs they were content to let Bush knock the ball back, and then swoop through to carry all before them. The forwards packed closer in the loose than they have done in the last two matches, and broke smartly from the scrums with the result that when Bush did heel, their backs were surrounded by Wairarapa forwards. All the Wairarapa forwards played well, but Joblin and Ross, two newcomers. showed up in the tight. Russ Howard played a typical captain’s game and was always, to the fore in loose rushes. His opening try was a “gem.” Hatton, until he retired with an injured knee, was the pick of the Wairarapa rearguard, who all played well under the conditions. O’Callaghan saved his side on numerous occasions, standing up to the fierce Bush forward rushes creditably. Wairarapa scored when, from a lineout Bush knocked the ball back over their half-back’s head and Russ Howard coming through fast dribbled over the goal line for a touch down. The kick failed. The first half ended with no further score. In the second spell J. Henson topped off a fine Wairarapa back movement with a try in the corner, and R. Brunton landed a beautiful penalty goal from 35 yards out and close to the touchline.
